Is there a stereotype that nonfiction is a somewhat boring genre? It doesn’t have to be. Balancing poetic explorations with prosaic rigour, creative non-fiction is a form of writing that has endless creative potential. Whether you’re a poet who wants to dip a toe into essay-writing and memoir, or a journalist or essayist who wants to zhuzh up their prose, we’ll explore examples of authors who’ve mastered creative nonfiction and explore strategies for hitting on approaches that work for you.

Speakers

  • Alex Manley is a 37-year-old non-binary writer, editor, and poet from and living in Montreal/Tiohtià:ke. Most recently, they are the author of Post-Man: Essays on Being a Neurodivergent Non-Binary Person (Arsenal Pulp Press, 2025). Their essays, fiction and poetry have appeared in numerous print and online publications, including The Walrus, Hazlitt, Vulture, Self, Catapult, Electric Literature, Maisonneuve, and Carte Blanche. They have been a finalist for a National Magazine Award, a Digital Publishing Award, the Metatron Prize, the Mavis Gallant Prize for Non- Fiction and the Cole Foundation Prize for Translation.
