Speakers

  • Leonard Diepeveen is the Emeritus George Munro Professor of Literature and Rhetoric at Dalhousie University. Over the course of his tenure there he published widely as a scholar of modernist literature and visual art, and in 2020 was elected as a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada. His memoir, When I Come Back We Will Talk: My Father, the War, and Me, was published in September 2026 by Freehand Books (Calgary) and released in a Dutch translation by Querido (Amsterdam). His recent short story “Lining Things Up” appeared in the Summer 2026 issue of Toronto Journal. He lives in Halifax, Nova Scotia.

  • Ruth Ozeki is a novelist, filmmaker, and Zen Buddhist priest. She is the bestselling author of four novels: The Book of Form and Emptiness, winner of the UK's 2022 Women's Prize for Fiction; My Year of Meats; All Over Creation; and A Tale for the Time Being, which won the Los Angeles Times Book Prize and was a finalist for the 2013 Booker Prize and the National Book Critics Circle Award. Her nonfiction work includes a memoir, The Face: A Time Code, and the documentary film Halving the Bones. A longtime Buddhist practitioner, Ruth is affiliated with the Everyday Zen Foundation. She is now professor emerita of English language and literature at Smith College, where she was the Grace Jarcho Ross 1933 Professor of Humanities.

  • Robert J. Sawyer—dubbed “the dean of Canadian science fiction” by the Ottawa Citizen and the CBC—has won both the Hugo and Nebula Awards for Best Science Fiction Novel of the Year; a record-setting 16 Canadian Science Fiction and Fantasy Awards (“Auroras”); the top science-fiction awards in China, Japan, France, and Spain; an Arthur Ellis Award from the Crime Writers of Canada; and over 50 other national and international writing awards. He is a member of both the Order of Canada and the Order of Ontario and was one of the nine initial inductees into the Canadian Science Fiction and Fantasy Hall of Fame.
