Join several contributors to On Occasion: Poems for the People, in conversation with anthology editor Sina Queyras. “The call for this anthology urged poetry in the tradition of the poem as an act of love, an act of protest, an act of visionary incantation, an act of remembrance, a call to arms, and a much-needed balm, and poets across North America and beyond responded. In a range of styles from formal lyric poetry to visual and avant garde, the poems in this anthology speak directly to our moment,” Queyras writes.

  • Daryl Bruce is often accused of being all too human. Based in Kjipuktuk/Halifax, his work seeks to braid queer history, ritual and pop culture with a so-called scholar’s attention to how queer narratives are framed, marketed, and translated. His poetry, essays, and fiction have appeared in The Malahat Review, The New Quarterly, and PRISM International, among others. He teaches literature and creative writing.

  • Sue Goyette lives in K'jipuktuk (Halifax) and has published several books of poems and a novel. Her latest collection is Future Howl, (Gaspereau Press, 2025). She is the editor of Resistance: Righteous Rage in the Age of #MeToo (University of Regina Press, 2021), The 2017 Griffin Poetry Prize Anthology (Anansi, 2017) and The Best Canadian Poetry in English 2013 (Tightrope Books, 2013). Her work has been translated into French, Spanish and German and has been featured in films, subways, buses, spray painted on a sidewalk and tattooed. Her work has been nominated for the 2014 Griffin Poetry Prize and the Governor General’s Award and has won several awards including the 2015 Lieutenant Governor of Nova Scotia Masterworks Arts Award for her collection, Ocean; J.M. Abraham Poetry Award; the ReLit Award; the Pat Lowther Award for Poetry; the Bliss Carman Poetry Award; the Earle Birney Award; and the CBC Literary Award for Poetry.

  • Sina Queyras is a Montreal/Tiohtià:ke-based writer, professor, editor, and literary organizer. They are the author of multiple poetry collections, including Lemon Hound, which won the Pat Lowther and Lambda awards and Expressway, nominated for a Governor General’s Award. They recently edited On Occasion: Poems for the People. 

  • Luke Hathaway is a poet and theatre-creator whose work has been commissioned, performed, and published internationally. With Daniel Cabena he is Artistic Co-Director of ANIMA, a performance collective devoted to the re-queering of early-European sources and sound-worlds; and, with Debi Wong and Teiya Kasahara, he is a founding and core member of the opera-creation group Fractal Arts Collective. He loves working with other artists, and across disciplinary lines, to bring stories to life. Luke's most recent book of poems is The Affirmations, published by Biblioasis, a Times 'Best Book' of 2022. His most recent performance works are the co-created operas La Doriclea: Inter-Acts and Orpheus in UNDERWORLD, which are premiering as part of the CENSORED Opera Festival in Helsinki, Finland, in 2026.
