Join two dynamic artists in conversation about gathering Black family histories in the Maritimes, sharing and celebrating the communities that existed and that continue to flourish. Thandiwe McCarthy’s new book Still Here celebrates fifteen generational Black New Brunswick families and Aquakultre’s TV series GeneratioNS offers “the opportunity to tell our stories our way, and preserve our memories as a tool for people to learn.”

Speakers

  • Thandiwe McCarthy is a 7th-generation Black Canadian spoken word poet and writer. As culture correspondent for Maritime EDIT, he spotlights Black community leaders and artists. Honored in 2023 as a CBC Atlantic Canadian Black Changemaker, he has also helped establish Emancipation Day on August 1st in New Brunswick. His Canada Council-funded Still Here Initiative celebrates fifteen Generational Black New Brunswick families and launches in July 2026 with a national exhibition at Beaverbrook Art Gallery and a book by Goose Lane Editions.   • Aquakultre is Lance Sampson, a singer, rapper, composer, and storyteller whose three Polaris-nominated albums and multi-media collaborations range from rap and folk to experimental jazz and neoclassical hip hop chamber work. His recent projects in documentary television, visual art, and music, all draw from his explorations of ancestry, history, and community as a Black Nova Scotian who traces his roots back to 1783, which is also the title of his latest critically acclaimed album. Lance is the recipient of Creative NS's 2025 Black Artist Recognition Award and is currently Artist-in-Residence at the Black Cultural Centre in Cherry Brook, NS.
